Tour 3

Berlin and the Wall

an almost current story

East Side Gallery – Oberbaumbrücke – Günter Litfin watchtower – Berlin Wall Memorial – Mauerpark – Bornholmer Brücke

Who built the Berlin Wall and why was it put up? What was it like to live east of the dividing line? And to what extent are the differences between East and West still noticeable today? These are some of the questions we will address during your individual Berlin tour.

During this guided tour by bike or on foot, there’s more to see than Checkpoint Charlie and the Brandenburg Gate. We take a look at the past of the divided city during the Cold War. I experienced this time at first hand. Growing up in West Germany, I often traveled from West Berlin to the eastern part of the city as a teenager. It was the only way to visit family from East Germany.

One place you shouldn’t miss is the open-air exhibition on Bernauer Strasse, not the most famous, but the most authentic memorial to the Berlin Wall. We also take a look at one of the last remaining watchtowers and visit the place where the Wall came down first.
